<br />
Have you seen the BIG announcement from <a href="http://www.twoprettypoppets.com/" target="_blank">two pretty poppets</a>? Lisa has just released her latest pattern and it's a beauty.<br />
<br />
The <a href="http://www.twoprettypoppets.com/product/summer-lovin-beach-tote/" target="_blank">Summer Lovin' Beach Tote</a> comes equipped with five pockets outside (two on the front, one on the back, and one on each side)...<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Of course, all of these features are completely optional but I couldn't help myself and make everything available in the pattern. I think this will make a fantastic sewing retreat bag.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was lucky enough to test this pattern and can tell you know, it's every bit as wonderful as Lisa's other patterns. I won't lie, she's a BIG bag but, if you follow the pattern, she's actually a relatively easy sew. As always Lisa has provided clear and concise written instructions and photos to help you every step of the way. Head on over to the<a href="https://www.facebook.com/twoprettypoppets" target="_blank"> two pretty poppets Facebook page </a>to see more.</div>
<br />
The Summer Lovin' Beach Tote is available through the <a href="http://www.twoprettypoppets.com/product/summer-lovin-beach-tote/" target="_blank">two pretty poppets website</a>.<br />
<br />
I purchased all of my hardware for this bag through <a href="https://www.etsy.com/au/shop/HandbagHardwareOZ" target="_blank">Handbag Hardware Australia</a>.<br />
<br />
Happy Sewing xx<br />

<br />
Have you heard? Emkie Designs has just release her latest pattern, the Panic Clutch, and I can tell you right now...it is fantastic.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jjSydi1zzA0/Vq2I-fy5nGI/AAAAAAAADng/c7eNhj856Ok/s1600/Green%2Bcollage%2B500.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jjSydi1zzA0/Vq2I-fy5nGI/AAAAAAAADng/c7eNhj856Ok/s320/Green%2Bcollage%2B500.jpg" width="296" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm not normally a clutch person but the simple, unique design of the Panic Clutch really caught my attention. I was so pleased when Emma selected me to join her test team.<br />
<br />
Tha Panic Clutch features a twist lock and zipper closure, with a simple internal slip pocket. This is such a sweet sew that I barely had time to finish my bag of customary sewing M&M's before my first clutch was complete.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gqXl2goucy4/Vq2I3hKcVtI/AAAAAAAADnY/Os-o4nxgKJA/s1600/Zipper%2BCLosure%2B500.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="262" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gqXl2goucy4/Vq2I3hKcVtI/AAAAAAAADnY/Os-o4nxgKJA/s320/Zipper%2BCLosure%2B500.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tnwqxR1T2Bk/Vq2I2I-c6OI/AAAAAAAADnI/uSLj9pSmW6k/s1600/Pocket%2Band%2Bpattern%2Bmatch%2B500.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tnwqxR1T2Bk/Vq2I2I-c6OI/AAAAAAAADnI/uSLj9pSmW6k/s320/Pocket%2Band%2Bpattern%2Bmatch%2B500.jpg" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Check out the insane, and completely accidental, pattern matching!!!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
And just like those M&M's, the Panic Clutch is totally addictive. I really love how the design lends itself to a number of different styles:<br />
<br />
Cute and fun (because who doesn't love glitter vinyl)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-F0Wm8OZxUE4/Vq2IyEnPptI/AAAAAAAADnA/Wz4e7jD1L3s/s1600/Green%2BFlap%2B500.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-F0Wm8OZxUE4/Vq2IyEnPptI/AAAAAAAADnA/Wz4e7jD1L3s/s320/Green%2BFlap%2B500.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
A little business<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wRXapcpuhHo/Vq2Ivad4TcI/AAAAAAAADmw/T2n8LzpOex8/s1600/Black%2BFlap%2B500.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="246" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wRXapcpuhHo/Vq2Ivad4TcI/AAAAAAAADmw/T2n8LzpOex8/s320/Black%2BFlap%2B500.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Or an elegant evening affair.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lvxgRIBStgc/Vq2Ixmt08JI/AAAAAAAADm8/aKQx2lVvqQg/s1600/Gold%2BFlap%2B500.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lvxgRIBStgc/Vq2Ixmt08JI/AAAAAAAADm8/aKQx2lVvqQg/s320/Gold%2BFlap%2B500.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />

<b><span style="font-family: inherit;">How does it all work?</span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">This swap will run slightly differently to others you may be
familiar with. We will not be assigning partners until after the bags are
finished. Instead of stressing over meeting your partners ‘likes’ perfectly, you
simply need to make a bag that you think is awesome. Lisa and I will then pair
up people to bags as best we can.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>

rules to make this a fun, fair activity for all concerned:</span><br />

</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">In order for participants to know
what to expect from their mystery bag, we ask that you stick to the pattern.
You are, however, welcome to switch out two of the internal slip pockets for an
internal zip pocket if you wish.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Your completed bag must be
uploaded into the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/twoprettypoppets/" target="_blank">two pretty poppets PDF Sewing Patterns Facebook Group</a> folder by <b>March 24, 2016</b>.
Only those bags in the folder will be considered as part of the swap.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Your bag must be of the high
standard you would hope to receive in return. This includes using quality
fabric, interfacing and hardware. Please be aware, however, that participants
will be of different skill levels and you may receive a bag from someone more,
or less, experienced than yourself.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">You are welcome to share photos
of your bag on social media. Nobody knows where your bag is going so it will
still be a welcome surprise. When sharing, be sure to use the hashtag
<b>#standupswap2016 </b>so we can all follow along.</span></li>

<br />
It's 2016 and what better way to start the year than a <a href="http://www.onethimble.com.au/product/one-thimble-issue-9/?ref=18" target="_blank">One Thimble</a> blog hop? Let's face it, it just wouldn't be me if I didn't join in.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.onethimble.com.au/product/one-thimble-issue-9/?ref=18" title="One Thimble Issue 9 Out Now"><img alt="One Thimble Issue 9 Out Now" src="http://www.onethimble.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/OT9-Covers-Stand-Alone-Covers-Collage-thumbnail.jpg" title=" One Thimble Issue 9 Out Now" /></a>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
This issue of One Thimble was filled to the brim with some fantastic patterns and normally, when I sign up to the blog hop, I am happy to sew anything at all. This time however, I was determined to sew the latest pattern from my big girl designer crush, <a href="http://www.twoprettypoppets.com/" target="_blank">Two Pretty Poppets</a>. I know, I know...again!!!<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lBRVYdDroI0/VpIiv47ztmI/AAAAAAAADhM/KJTrDinDPRE/s1600/Front%2BBlue.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="The Statement Clutch by Two Pretty Poppets" border="0" height="224" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lBRVYdDroI0/VpIiv47ztmI/AAAAAAAADhM/KJTrDinDPRE/s320/Front%2BBlue.jpg" title="The Statement Clutch by Two Pretty Poppets" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Statement Clutch by Two Pretty Poppets</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The Statement Clutch is such a brilliant project. It's cute, it's classy, it's easy, it's fun...and you learn all the best swear words if you've never installed a twist lock before. Don't let that put you off though. Once you've done one you'll be twist locking everything you can get your hands on. They're seriously cool to play with and definitely worth the effort. <a href="http://emmalinebags.blogspot.ca/2013/11/how-to-install-purse-turn-locks-and.html" target="_blank">Emmaline Bags has a great tutorial</a>.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Twist locks are the new black</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
You don't need oodles of fabric either, which is fantastic if you're trying to sew from your stash as I have been. Each of these used scraps or fat quarters. Pretty sweet.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">This was my favourite scrap...</td></tr>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">...and inside is my favourite combo: Denim and Red with white spots</td></tr>

The pattern comes with a standard pocket, but I added a zip pocket for hiding all of my important secrets (ok, ok...chocolate).<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I added zip pocket to this, alongside the pocket that comes with the pattern.</td></tr>

I'm sure I only just set my 2015 resolutions???<br />
<br />
What a year it's been here at Sew Today, Clean Tomorrow. I learnt an enormous amount about sewing, quilting and the crafting world in general. I taught a bag making class (hopefully not the last) and even had a pattern in the fantastic digital magazine One Thimble. Most of all I had a wonderful time working with some great friends, both new and old.<br />

2016 looks to be just as successful...though perhaps a little different. On the home front, we are charging forward with renovations and hope to have made a lot more progress on our beautiful, though rather rundown home. It may mean less time sewing, but there is certainly a lot of creating going on.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

What will be happening for Sew Today, Clean Tomorrow? I have a few blog posts planned over the coming weeks, but things will be somewhat quiet for the first half of the year. While there are many ideas brewing in my mind, I'm planning on taking it easy for a while and just pottering around the house, doing whatever it is that takes my fancy. I will, however, be working hard on a new project that I hope to announce in the coming months. As always, I will be sharing loads of photos on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/sewtodaycleantomorrow/" target="_blank">Facebook </a>and <a href="https://www.instagram.com/sewtodaycleantomorrow/" target="_blank">Instagram </a>so be sure to follow me there.<br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Constructing your bag is easy, especially if you follow the great instructions Emma has provided in the pattern. Here are a few extra hints to
help you with your beautiful creation.</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
</div>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Baste the handles and flap in place before sewing the final seam. It can be tempting to
skip this step and just try to pin all of the layers together, but that can be
both messy and confusing. Trust me, it’s
worth the extra time.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KRiT55aT3o4/VkxbIKFhmbI/AAAAAAAADco/A2RAJg_oTWk/s1600/Pin%2Bflap.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Pin and baste the flap and handles" border="0" height="197" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KRiT55aT3o4/VkxbIKFhmbI/AAAAAAAADco/A2RAJg_oTWk/s320/Pin%2Bflap.jpg" title="Pin and baste the flap and handles" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pin and baste the flap and handles in place</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Take note of which side the magnetic snap is on the exterior and be sure to
position the flap on the opposite side. Likewise, check that your flap is facing
the right way before basting it on. I like to pin it in place, and then snap
the flap closed to be doubly sure everything is sitting where it should be.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Check where the internal pocket is on the lining. I like my pocket to be
on the same side as the flap (i.e. the back of the bag).</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Carefully line up the external and lining side seams. Finger pressing
the seams open can help to reduce bulk (or ‘nest’ the seams by placing them in
opposite directions as shown in <u><span style="color: blue;"><a href="http://sewtodaycleantomorrow.blogspot.com.au/2015/11/run-and-play-bag-sew-along-day-three.html">Run
and Play Bag Sew-Along: Day Three</a>)</span></u></span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Take the time to smooth out the raw edges, making sure everything is lining
up neatly.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Once your bag is sewn and turned the right away around, push out the
corners of both the external and interior bag, and make sure everything is sitting correctly, before closing the turning gap.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">When top stitching, take note of where your flap and handles are. I like to keep them under the arm/throat of the machine with
the main body of the bag on the other side of the needle (i.e. have the flap open). If you have them both
on the same side, you may end up accidentally top stitching them down.</span></li>
</ul>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Top stitch with the flap open</td></tr>

an Intermediate level and I think that is a fairly accurate assessment. It wasn’t
difficult as such, but there were a few sections that might be frustrating for an absolute beginner. Of course, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t jump in and

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Install the other side of your magnetic snap just as you did yesterday. Here is a reminder
of my hints and tips:<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">

<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Be sure to double check your measurements before cutting the slits for
your snap.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">I like to use my seam ripper to make the slits for the magnetic snap.
Simply start at one end of the line you've drawn and slice to the other end. Be
careful though. It is easy to use too much force and end up cutting a slit much
longer than is required.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Once the magnetic snap is in place, put the piece face down on your
table and push the prongs of the snap outwards. Some prongs bend with little
force while others require quite a bit more.</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"> </span></li>

<b><span style="font-family: inherit;">Creating your Flap<o:p></o:p></span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
</div>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Pin your external and lining pieces well to avoid them moving when
sewing together.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">When you reach the corner angles leave your needle down, lift the
presser foot, and gently turn the fabric, taking care to keep the raw edges
aligned. It can help to draw the intersection of your seam allowance at corner
angles to pinpoint where the needle should fall before turning the fabric.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Remember to clip the corners before turning the flap out the right way. This
will help give your flap sharp, precise angles.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Press the flap to make sure everything is sitting neatly. The aim is to
not see the lining fabric from the front.</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;">Topstitching will give a great finish to your flap, and will help the
layers sit neatly. I find increasing my stitch length slightly helps keep my
topstitching neat and tidy.</span><span style="font-family: inherit;"> </span></li>

<br />
Today we get to see our bags really start taking shape. If you've fallen behind don't panic, you can find the previous blog posts here:<br />

<br />
Let's jump straight in, shall we?<br />
<br />
<b>Magnetic Snap</b><br />
Installing the magnetic clasp is super easy if you follow the instructions on the pattern. Be sure to double check your measurements before making any cuts though. The last thing you want to do is rush in and end up with your snap a half an inch to the left of where it is meant to be.<br />
<br />
I like to use my seam ripper to make the slits for the magnetic snap. Simply start at one end of the line you've drawn and slice to the other end. Be careful though. It is easy to use too much force and end up cutting a slit much longer than is required.<br />
<br />
Once the magnetic snap is in place, put the piece face down on your table and push the prongs of the snap outwards. Some prongs bend with little force while others require quite a bit more.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CWDapCbHvGU/VksA1xeQjHI/AAAAAAAADa8/qGrjF5tpMr8/s1600/Magnetic%2BSnap.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Magnetic Snap" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CWDapCbHvGU/VksA1xeQjHI/AAAAAAAADa8/qGrjF5tpMr8/s1600/Magnetic%2BSnap.jpg" title="Magnetic Snap" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Magnetic Snap</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<b>Darts</b><br />
Fold at the centre of the dart so that the dart legs match up. I recommend pinning or clipping the dart in place to prevent it moving while you sew.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iwN_bsKWPwk/VksA2Njy4UI/AAAAAAAADbA/u5RN31NQLDs/s1600/Darts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Fold and Clip the darts" border="0" height="318" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-iwN_bsKWPwk/VksA2Njy4UI/AAAAAAAADbA/u5RN31NQLDs/s320/Darts.jpg" title="Fold and Clip the darts" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Fold and clip the darts</td></tr>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">How seriously cute are these offcuts!!!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<b>Creating the External/Lining Shells</b><br />
Here are a few hints for sewing your pieces together to create the external and lining shells:<br />
<br />
Nest the dart seams to reduce bulk. That is, have once seam facing in one direction and the other seam in the opposite direction. You will find the seam then snuggles in nicely to make a neat,bulk-free seam. (Psst...this is a great tip when making a quilt).<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0TRcougP-xc/VksA2Mo0VjI/AAAAAAAADbo/QNHvKhq56HA/s1600/Nest%2BSeams.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Nest the seams" border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0TRcougP-xc/VksA2Mo0VjI/AAAAAAAADbo/QNHvKhq56HA/s320/Nest%2BSeams.jpg" title="Nest the seams" width="284" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Nesting seams can help reduce bulk</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
To make it easier to align the raw edges, pop one of the pieces 'inside out' so that it sits inside the other.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YUZ77GzFzPU/VksA2gHfDVI/AAAAAAAADbY/RHnoODj_IAo/s1600/Snuggle.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Snuggle the pieces" border="0" height="202" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YUZ77GzFzPU/VksA2gHfDVI/AAAAAAAADbY/RHnoODj_IAo/s320/Snuggle.jpg" title="Snuggle the pieces" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Snuggle the pieces together</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Remember to leave a gap in the lining so you can turn your bag in the right way once it's all sewn together. I like to reinforce the start/end of the turning gap with a few extra backstitches to ensure it doesn't come apart when turning the bag.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KkG3pPHY9_M/VksA3p2wvFI/AAAAAAAADbc/2lHE6BamGuo/s1600/Turning%2BGap.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Turning Gap" border="0" height="189" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KkG3pPHY9_M/VksA3p2wvFI/AAAAAAAADbc/2lHE6BamGuo/s320/Turning%2BGap.jpg" title="Turning Gap" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Be sure to leave a turning gap</td></tr>
</tbody></table>

<br />
Welcome back for day two of the Run and Play Bag Sew-Along.<br />
<br />
You should now have your pieces cut, interfacing fused and darts transferred, as discussed in <a href="http://sewtodaycleantomorrow.blogspot.com.au/2015/11/run-and-play-bag-sew-along-day-one.html" target="_blank">yesterday's post</a>. If you're joining us for the first time, you can find out all the sew-along details <a href="http://sewtodaycleantomorrow.blogspot.com.au/2015/11/run-and-play-bag-sew-along.html" target="_blank">here</a>. Don't worry. It's not to late to jump on board and be in the running for some great prizes.<br />
<br />
Today we will be sewing the shoulder or cross-body strap and creating the internal zip pocket. I have chosen the Shoulder Strap (Handle Option 1) for my bag. If you have chosen the Cross Body Strap (Handle Option 2) then just follow the super simple pattern instructions.<br />
<br />
Here are a few tips for those that have chosen the Shoulder Strap:<br />
<br />
1) Glue basting the fabric to the zip can help keep everything in place. Ensure the zip and each layer of fabric are laying nice and flat on your table. It makes it much easier to line up the raw edges.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mNPxjRyNlNg/VkmtLZgm8SI/AAAAAAAADZ8/fF6jdt9xwK4/s1600/Glue%2BBaste.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Glue Baste" border="0" height="111" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mNPxjRyNlNg/VkmtLZgm8SI/AAAAAAAADZ8/fF6jdt9xwK4/s320/Glue%2BBaste.jpg" title="Glue Baste" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A few dabs of glue can help baste the zip</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
2) You may find the zip pull gets in the way of your sewing machine foot. If this is the case, stop sewing with the needle down. Lift the foot and pull the zip stop out of the way by zipping it to behind the foot. You may need to wriggle it a little to encourage it to cooperate.<br />
<br />
3) Take your time. Sew slowly and adjust the layers so the raw edges line up, and your stitches are neat and parallel to the zip teeth.<br />
<br />
4) When sewing the Strap Ends, take care not to sew over the metal zip stops. Your needle will not like it. Slow down near these points and be sure you're sewing next to, not on, them.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H0Ed5ADpS8k/VkmtM9dTrXI/AAAAAAAADak/Gc5Vc8Xrd2Q/s1600/Zip%2BStop.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Avoid the metal stopper" border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H0Ed5ADpS8k/VkmtM9dTrXI/AAAAAAAADak/Gc5Vc8Xrd2Q/s320/Zip%2BStop.jpg" title="Avoid the metal stopper" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Be sure to sew on either side of the metal stopper</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
5) At step 11 <b>OPEN THE ZIP</b>. It says that clearly in the pattern but it's a horrible nuisance if you forget to do it, so I'm mentioning it here too.<br />
<br />
6) Turning the strap the right way out can be a little fiddly. Start at one end and feed the end through itself. Repeat for the other end and the middle will follow. You may need to be a little firm, but take care not to rip your stitches. Give your strap a good press to help it recover.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e0usu8QPCKg/VkmtMnWHu7I/AAAAAAAADag/ojL7LjabgUU/s1600/Shoulder%2BStrap.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Shoulder Strap Complete" border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-e0usu8QPCKg/VkmtMnWHu7I/AAAAAAAADag/ojL7LjabgUU/s320/Shoulder%2BStrap.jpg" title="Shoulder Strap Complete" width="138" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Shoulder Strap finished....so pretty</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Today we will also Create the Internal Zip Pocket. Here are some hints to help you with this step:<br />
<br />
1) Find the centre of the Zip Pocket and Lining pieces by folding them in half and finger pressing to make a crease.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-n_pB0dvK2KE/VkmtLQdaQuI/AAAAAAAADaM/7uK1hRiE3s8/s1600/Fold%2Bin%2BHalf.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Foldin Half" border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-n_pB0dvK2KE/VkmtLQdaQuI/AAAAAAAADaM/7uK1hRiE3s8/s320/Fold%2Bin%2BHalf.jpg" title="Foldin Half" width="278" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Fold the fabric in half and finger press</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dNXPRbiFcLM/VkmtKbZO90I/AAAAAAAADZw/IQcPIiueE30/s1600/Align%2BCentres.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Line up centres" border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dNXPRbiFcLM/VkmtKbZO90I/AAAAAAAADZw/IQcPIiueE30/s320/Align%2BCentres.jpg" title="Line up centres" width="310" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Align the centre folds and use a ruler to position the pocket</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
2) When cutting your slit (step 30) use a rotary cutter to make a neat slice. Then use your scissors to carefully snip to the end of the line and for each corner.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Use a rotary cutter to make a slit</td></tr>
</tbody></table>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Switch to scissors for more precise cutting</td></tr>

<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xVRKsiMmMbU/VkmtMBoakiI/AAAAAAAADaY/XqxeyE5JY1Q/s1600/Scissors%2Bto%2Bcorner.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Clip the corner" border="0" height="246" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xVRKsiMmMbU/VkmtMBoakiI/AAAAAAAADaY/XqxeyE5JY1Q/s320/Scissors%2Bto%2Bcorner.jpg" title="Clip the corner" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Cut to the corners, but take care not to cut the stitching</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
3) Turning the pocket the right side out can be a little fiddly. Just focus on one edge at a time and it will all fall into place. Sometimes I find pressing and clipping/pinning as I go can help keep things where they're meant to be.<br />
<br />
4) In step 34, when sewing your pocket sides, pay attention to where your lining is. You don't want it getting caught up in your pocket. Clipping the lining well out of the way can help prevent any boo-boos.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pin the lining out of the way</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-V_pLBWzmswU/VkmtKRUqBaI/AAAAAAAADZ0/0rQMHoanr10/s1600/Finished%2BPocket.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Internal Pocket Complete" border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-V_pLBWzmswU/VkmtKRUqBaI/AAAAAAAADZ0/0rQMHoanr10/s320/Finished%2BPocket.jpg" title="Internal Pocket Complete" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Internal pocket is complete.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>

<br />
Last Monday I announced the very exciting news that I would be hosting a sew-along for the great new Run and Play Bag by Aussie designer, For My Little Monster. You can read all about it <a href="http://sewtodaycleantomorrow.blogspot.com.au/2015/11/run-and-play-bag-sew-along.html" target="_blank">here</a>, including details of the fantastic prizes up for grabs!!!<br />
<br />
By now you should have printed your pattern and have your fabric, interfacing and fleece/stabiliser cut out and ready to go. If you're not at this point yet don't panic. I have broken each day into very small sections so you will easily be able to catch up should life get in the way (as it nearly always does).<br />

<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Lk77-nprnUY/VkhjAoEeg7I/AAAAAAAADYE/kt-u7fwrSY8/s1600/Cut%2Band%2Bready.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Pieces cut and ready to sew" border="0" height="244" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Lk77-nprnUY/VkhjAoEeg7I/AAAAAAAADYE/kt-u7fwrSY8/s320/Cut%2Band%2Bready.jpg" title="Pieces cut and ready to sew" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">All cut up and ready to sew</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Today we will be tackling the first step of the pattern:<b> Attach Your Stabilisers</b>. This is super easy, helps you familiarise yourself with the pattern and is a great chance to confirm that you have all the bits and pieces needed.<br />
<br />
<i>Hint: Keep the paper pattern pieces pinned to the relevant fabric/interfacing/fleece pieces for easy reference and to help stay organised.</i><br />
<br />
I started by fusing the medium weight interfacing to the required pieces. Here are a few tips when doing this:<br />
<ol>
<li>Check that you have the glue side of the interfacing (usually the shinier side) against the wrong side of the fabric. You don't want to be fusing interfacing to the right side of the fabric or worse, to your iron!</li>
<li>Press and hold the iron on the fabric, rather than moving it back and forward as you would when ironing clothes. This will prevent the pieces from stretching or moving under the iron.</li>
<li>Press for about 5 - 10 seconds in each spot and confirm that the glue has taken hold. If not, press again. Be sure to fuse to the entire piece of fabric. Don't miss a spot.</li>
<li>I sometimes find it helpful to lightly spray the fabric with water and then press. It seems to help with the fusing process (of course, it could all be in my head too).</li>
<li>Use a pressing cloth if you're that way inclined. I do if I'm worried about marking my fabric.</li>
<li>Take your time. It's worth the few extra minutes to have your pieces fused perfectly.</li>
</ol>
<div>
If you find any interfacing hanging over the edge of the fabric once fused, trim it back. This makes life much easier when trying to align raw edges later on.</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-C-w9So-TrZ4/VkhjBhlzv6I/AAAAAAAADZA/Yxhm64yfLHw/s1600/Interfacing.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Fusible interfacing attached" border="0" height="181" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-C-w9So-TrZ4/VkhjBhlzv6I/AAAAAAAADZA/Yxhm64yfLHw/s320/Interfacing.jpg" title="Fusible interfacing attached" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Fusible interfacing attached</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
Next attach the fusible fleece/foam stabiliser. I opted for the foam because it's what I had on hand (though I did use fleece for the shoulder strap pieces). </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you're using fusible fleece, you can apply the same technique as with the fusible interfacing. If you're using foam, then baste it to the wrong side of the fabric by stitching approximately 1/8'' around the edges. Make sure the fabric is nice and taught, though not stretched, against the foam. You don't want any puckers.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Again, trim any excess fleece/foam so that your pieces are shaped as per the pattern.</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ApmGlg8bz0M/VkhjCekc7BI/AAAAAAAADYo/7aJ5Vb69XWg/s1600/Stabiliser.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Fleece/Foam attached" border="0" height="224" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ApmGlg8bz0M/VkhjCekc7BI/AAAAAAAADYo/7aJ5Vb69XWg/s320/Stabiliser.jpg" title="Fleece/Foam attached" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Fleece/Foam attached</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div>
Finally, transfer the darts from the pattern pieces to the wrong side of your fabric/fleece/foam. I did this a little differently (i.e. lazier) than the way shown in the pattern.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Place the pattern on the wrong side of the fabric, aligning the edges.</div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rXlmDi7fTdg/VkhjBlyfkVI/AAAAAAAADYY/3uPE_h_VLxw/s1600/Dart%2BPattern%2BPiece.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Lay down the pattern piece" border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rXlmDi7fTdg/VkhjBlyfkVI/AAAAAAAADYY/3uPE_h_VLxw/s320/Dart%2BPattern%2BPiece.jpg" title="Lay down the pattern piece" width="266" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Lay down the pattern piece</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Fold the pattern along the first dart leg and draw a line.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9blB5L_jGO8/VkhjA83MucI/AAAAAAAADY8/FQ2cHSxXu00/s1600/Dart%2BLeg%2B1%2BDrawn.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Fold and draw along the first leg" border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9blB5L_jGO8/VkhjA83MucI/AAAAAAAADY8/FQ2cHSxXu00/s320/Dart%2BLeg%2B1%2BDrawn.jpg" title="Fold and draw along the first leg" width="260" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Fold and draw along the first leg</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Repeat for the second leg and...you have a dart. This isn't the most accurate of techniques so I wouldn't necessarily recommend it in garment making, but it works fine here.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-p_IZ47klmNc/VkhjA4mp1pI/AAAAAAAADYM/8t3nt6PCmRc/s1600/Dart%2BDrawn.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Repeat for the second dart leg" border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-p_IZ47klmNc/VkhjA4mp1pI/AAAAAAAADYM/8t3nt6PCmRc/s320/Dart%2BDrawn.jpg" title="Repeat for the second dart leg" width="273" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Repeat for the second dart leg</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
That's where we will leave things today. You should now have all of your pieces cut, stabilised, and darts transferred. Tomorrow we will be working on the straps and internal pocket.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<br />
A question that is often raised in the sewing world these days is, "Which is better? PDF or paper patterns?". A legitimate question, but one that strikes me as rather odd because PDF and paper are simply the delivery mechanism for the pattern. It's a bit like asking "Is an apple tastier in a bowl or on a plate?". Surely it depends on the apple itself and not the way in which it arrives at your table. This debate doesn't extend to sandwiches though, which everyone knows taste better cut into triangles than squares.
<br />
<br />
Now, don't get me wrong, there are definite differences in the delivery modes of patterns, as discussed below, but the quality of a pattern should come down to the individual designer and not the way in which they are presenting their wares. If their designs appeal and they write clear and concise instructions, with correct and accurate pattern pieces, then load up your cart and buy away. If you limit yourself to only one type of pattern, you're missing out on an entire world of sewing knowledge and experience.
<br />
<br />
What are the pros and cons of PDF and paper patterns? I've put together a brief list based on my personal experience with both types.<br />
<br />
Before we begin, let's avoid confusion by using the following definitions:
<br />
<br />
'<b>PDF</b>' refers to a digital file that you download on your own device and print personally, either at home or at your local printers.
<br />
<br />
'<b>Paper</b>' refers to the older style of pattern printed on tissue-type paper and sold in an envelope. It does not mean a paper print out of a PDF pattern, which is yet another option.
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8-6JugJlcYpHVcvxpnKi3jCcyVsZKX-pi3qz86jDJAVl0yOEwZ0LRQ7rNwXHsVKyWmzqSOsiFEf1f3DsJ-azOwrrYXqKqkC4XgwQRLWkk7GrIG3_GKi2Q97hfmXCYXKC-VFUXqMFPbiaA/s1600/Paper+PDF.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Pros and Cons of Paper and PDF" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8-6JugJlcYpHVcvxpnKi3jCcyVsZKX-pi3qz86jDJAVl0yOEwZ0LRQ7rNwXHsVKyWmzqSOsiFEf1f3DsJ-azOwrrYXqKqkC4XgwQRLWkk7GrIG3_GKi2Q97hfmXCYXKC-VFUXqMFPbiaA/s1600/Paper+PDF.png" title="Pros and Cons of Paper and PDF" /></a></div>
Please remember that these are not directed at any particular designer or company. They are nothing more than my opinion based on my own experiences. You may have a completely different opinion and that's absolutely fine.<br />
<br />
As far as I'm concerned, there really is no way of saying that a particular type of pattern is better than another. It all comes down to the design, instructions, and what you, personally, are expecting.<br />
<br />
What are your Pros and Cons for Paper and PDF patterns?

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: inherit; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Us1_u1SHNf0/VjCSBE9PYtI/AAAAAAAADUc/3Qj2E1a3_ik/s1600/Title%2BImage%2B1000.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Upcycle: Playtime Hula Skirt" border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Us1_u1SHNf0/VjCSBE9PYtI/AAAAAAAADUc/3Qj2E1a3_ik/s320/Title%2BImage%2B1000.jpg" title="Upcycle: Playtime Hula Skirt" width="272" /></a></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My darling daughter has decided that she absolutely MUST learn both surfing and hula dancing (we've been watching Lilo and Stitch). Unfortunately, Tasmania isn't really the Polynesian dance capital of the world, so I opted for a slightly less troublesome way of appeasing the gods of toddler demands and made her a hula skirt. This was such a quick and easy project that I thought I'd share the steps with you.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
First of all, find an old adult sized t-shirt. I conveniently had this greenish one laying around waiting for just such an occasion.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1ol4OyH7aiY/VjCSBBPcjRI/AAAAAAAADUY/6mWvtpMWfrg/s1600/Tshirt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Find an old adult t-shirt" border="0" height="259" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1ol4OyH7aiY/VjCSBBPcjRI/AAAAAAAADUY/6mWvtpMWfrg/s320/Tshirt.jpg" title="Find an old adult t-shirt" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Grab an adult sized t-shirt</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Trim off the top, at around sleeve level, and the hem. You could measure the length you need, but I just sliced off and hoped for the best. Keep the side seams in place.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rEK3JnluEPM/VjCR-f93M4I/AAAAAAAADT8/EEiSYMnPm4I/s1600/Chopped.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Chop off the top at the arms and the hem" border="0" height="306" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rEK3JnluEPM/VjCR-f93M4I/AAAAAAAADT8/EEiSYMnPm4I/s320/Chopped.jpg" title="Chop off the top at the arms and the hem" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Cut off the sleeves and hem.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Create some fringing by making cuts about 1/2'' - 1'' apart. Stop a few inches from the top to allow for a waistband or elastic casing. A rotary cutter makes this a breeze. You don't need to be too accurate as it will all just curl up anyway.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PSrDkJoQcC4/VjCR96rCKTI/AAAAAAAADTw/9JX9-rLJpl0/s1600/Fringe.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Cut some fringing" border="0" height="244" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PSrDkJoQcC4/VjCR96rCKTI/AAAAAAAADTw/9JX9-rLJpl0/s320/Fringe.jpg" title="Cut some fringing" width="320" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Create fringing</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Add a waistband or elastic casing. I used whatever elastic I had laying around (I think it was 3/4'' or something) and sewed it into a casing at the top of the skirt, like you would for any simple skirt. Other possibilities are a yoga style waistband or fold-over elastic.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><img alt="Hula Skirt" border="0" height="257" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-l_RtH9-0_4I/VjCR-kSt2gI/AAAAAAAADUA/DEEONmX3734/s320/Finished%2BSkirt.jpg" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" title="Hula Skirt" width="320" /></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Hula Skirt</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-l_RtH9-0_4I/VjCR-kSt2gI/AAAAAAAADUA/DEEONmX3734/s1600/Finished%2BSkirt.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"></span></a></div>
I can see this working for other costumes too. For example, a Pocahontas style dress, pirate skirt, or pretty much anything that needs a little swishy action. I'm even thinking up ways it could work for something for myself.<br />
<br />

After over 24 hours she has finally, reluctantly, handed it over for a wash (yes, she even slept in it last night). I guess I'm off to find some more shirts to make a few backup skirts.<br />

I've lost my sewjo. More accurately, I've lost my quiltjo. It actually disappeared a few weeks ago but I thought it was just a phase. This weekend, however, I realised it is so much more. It is opportunity. This is the bright shining light of change I've been waiting for. It's not just a sign. It's a giant, neon, animated gif, sign-up-to-our-newsletter-pop-up, in your face kind of sign you'd see on the streets of Vegas or on poorly designed websites (there I said it...I'm a not-so-closet pop-up hater). What the heckity am I talking about? Let me back up a little...<br />
<br />
I love writing patterns and tutorials. I truly love it. My dream is to do it for many more years to come. One day I hope to be writing for some of our own Aussie designers to free up time for them to create more awesomeness, but that's another story. The point is, I love what I do. "So, what's the problem?" I hear you ask. The problem is that I peaked a little too early. This year was supposed to be about networking, finding my feet, dipping my toe in the water that is pattern writing.<br />
<br />
I was fortunate enough to be presented with some amazing opportunities earlier this year that led to more follower and, finally, some hard earned cash. The downside to this is that I wasn't actually ready to continue climbing the dizzying heights of stardom. I was supposed to be at home, enjoying the last months with my baby girl before she hits the scary world of Kindergarten next year. I was supposed to be learning all I could about sewing and pattern creation, and finding my own creative niche. What I wasn't supposed to be doing was yelling out phrases like "Not now, I'm busy" or "I really have to get this finished".<br />
<br />
I've been having an attack of the guilts of late and, to be perfectly honest, I haven't really enjoyed working on my quilts for a while now. It became glaringly obvious that something was wrong this weekend when the International Quilt Market images started rolling in and, instead of daydreaming about one day going along, I thought "oh...well isn't that nice" and scrolled happily scrolled past to see what my dressmaking friends were up to.<br />
<br />
I've spent the last week or two reading sewing books and stalking non-quilting pattern designers and have decided that it's time I found that creative niche I was supposed to be searching for. It's time I found out what I wanted to do as opposed to what I was good at or stumbled upon.<br />
<br />
What does this mean for you? Well....nothing really, I just love to write and felt this was a good story. I will still blog about quilts, I will still write patterns. In fact, I will probably write more than I ever have before, but I will also be going back to my plan from when I first created this blog, and write about my sewing journey in the hope that it inspires others to pursue their own happiness. Oh...and of course I will still be showcasing the remarkable talents of Aussie/NZ pattern writers. What better way to learn than from your peers?Rachael (Sew Today, Clean Tomorrow)http://www.blogger.com/profile/03287185316856360621noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1824278298671185011.post-36236957136648048322015-10-12T01:50:00.001-07:002015-10-12T01:52:20.035-07:00Made4bug: Free Motion Applique Pattern<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vBFc_wXMWpU/VhtqZbHOU1I/AAAAAAAADS4/NI2MNRgM4GI/s1600/Title%2B1000.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Made4bug: Free Motion Applique Design" border="0" height="274" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vBFc_wXMWpU/VhtqZbHOU1I/AAAAAAAADS4/NI2MNRgM4GI/s400/Title%2B1000.jpg" title="Made4bug: Free Motion Applique Design" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When Leanne and Gail, the creative talent behind <a href="https://www.facebook.com/made4bug" target="_blank">made4bug</a>, first approached me to review their <a href="https://www.etsy.com/au/listing/243326004/calico-jack-fishnet-bonnie-pirate-bundle" target="_blank">Calico Jack and Fishnet Bonnie Free Motion Applique Pattern</a> my mind filled with a plethora of awe-inspiring ideas. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While I'm comfortable with free-motion quilting, at a beginner level, I have never tried free-motion applique. I've seen a lot of very funky designs floating around and always thought it'd be something I'd look at 'one day', but never really got around to it. After reading this pattern though, I knew it was something I needed to do. I was dreaming up skirts, dresses, bags, quilts, cushions. You name it, I was going to free-motion it. Unfortunately, my threenager caught wind of my plan and had other ideas...but more on that soon.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Firstly, the pattern is really well written. It's very easy to follow and there are some great hints and tips. It's labelled with a difficulty level of Intermediate, which seems appropriate to me as the technique can take a little getting used to, but don't let that stop you from jumping in and giving it a red hot go (seriously, what's the worst that can happen?). There are even some practice templates included, which are great for increasing your comfort level before tackling your pirate.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I really love how you can complete this project from scraps. It means you're less afraid of making mistakes, but also allows you to add some gorgeous designs to projects without breaking the bank.</div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Sgev7c9Ir4Q/VhtWM4pqsYI/AAAAAAAADR8/OYlF1aNJ-ig/s1600/Parts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="All my itty bitty pieces ready to go" border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Sgev7c9Ir4Q/VhtWM4pqsYI/AAAAAAAADR8/OYlF1aNJ-ig/s320/Parts.jpg" title="All my itty bitty pieces ready to go" width="291" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">All my itty bitty pieces ready to go</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The first few steps are super easy and it's really fun dressing your pirate (the phrase 'suit up' may have been chuckled once or twice).<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Nwk8W2tufAA/VhtWNqmNzgI/AAAAAAAADSY/26jGcYuoo8U/s1600/Ready%2Bto%2Bstitch.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="All fused up and ready to sew" border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Nwk8W2tufAA/VhtWNqmNzgI/AAAAAAAADSY/26jGcYuoo8U/s320/Ready%2Bto%2Bstitch.jpg" title="All fused up and ready to sew" width="179" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">All fused up and ready to sew</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
At first I thought I was just making a mess of the whole thing, but when I took a step back it actually started to look pretty awesome. The best part is that it's supposed to be a little messy, like a sketch, so it's easy to cover most mistakes.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here's a back view of my progress. It just looked too cute not to share.</div>
<div>
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">It's neater than the front.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Now back to that threenager issue I mentioned earlier. I had planned on either appliqueing this beauty to a bag or a skirt, but the Lord Commander insisted on a doll. As far as she was concerned, I was making a pirate doll and no amount of persuasion (i.e. chocolate) was going to convince her otherwise. She even had the boat ready. I tried to sneakily make a second but she discovered that one too...now she has two dolls.<br />
<br />
I don't really mind. It was actually kinda fun playing pirates today.</div>

<br />
If your child is anything like mine then your house is probably filled with drawing after drawing of head people. These delightful characters seem to be the starting point for the budding artist and usually consist of a head, legs, arms and a face. Sometimes there'll even be hands and feet, knees, elbows, eyebrows or cheeks.<br />
<br />
I love head people. I wish I could keep every single head person that has been so loving sketched. Unfortunately, to do so would require some sort of Tardis storage system and that doesn't seem like the best use of such advanced alien technology.<br />
<br />
After a particularly enjoyable head drawing, I decided that there was only one course of action. I would simply have to embroider a copy to be forever hung on the wall (once I find a suitable frame that is).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AaFsar28vdo/VhdHTsCtPAI/AAAAAAAADRU/muacfITTKSk/s1600/Finished%2BImage.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Head People Family</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
This was a super easy project that I took absolutely no progress photos of hahaha. Sorry about that. Long story short, I traced the drawing on to fabric and then back-stitched along the lines to make the drawing. I used 3 strands of DMC thread to make it nice and thick. You could use any thread and stitch you like. I wanted to keep it nice and easy. It really was that simple.<br />

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It will come as no surprise that I love sewing bags. They're funky, easy to personalise, and practical...or at least they should be. I have come across a few bags that look great, but lack a certain usefulness. Perhaps there are no pockets, thin/weak straps, or it doesn't hold it's shape. When I saw the<a href="http://www.twoprettypoppets.com/product/stand-up-and-tote-notice/" target="_blank"> Stand Up & Tote Notice pattern</a>, from Australian designer <a href="http://www.twoprettypoppets.com/" target="_blank">Two Pretty Poppets</a>, I suspected I was onto a winner. This pattern is extremely well written and easy to follow. Which is a big call because I've been writing instructions for over fifteen years and have been known to be a tad picky when it comes to patterns and tutorials.<br />

Lisa, the talent behind Two Pretty Poppets, is an absolute delight to deal with. I highly recommend visiting her various social media platforms and checking out her great patterns. I promise you won't be disappointed.<br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxnxp5tPEo35YRPgSWvUwWWWgg2F1sb5_YZ-lt8W25oMms8ZFAEc25tTqsJ6__9aqvckLJUPNVC7HsMuAi9jA5uD_0gweW0s9f_D1snFQeKFaZLAyYAtwa0_kmo_Ih-rZPwp9IyDRbAgbh/s1600/I+support+local+transparent+200.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxnxp5tPEo35YRPgSWvUwWWWgg2F1sb5_YZ-lt8W25oMms8ZFAEc25tTqsJ6__9aqvckLJUPNVC7HsMuAi9jA5uD_0gweW0s9f_D1snFQeKFaZLAyYAtwa0_kmo_Ih-rZPwp9IyDRbAgbh/s1600/I+support+local+transparent+200.png" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
It's baaaack. You may remember my <a href="http://sewtodaycleantomorrow.blogspot.com.au/p/i-support-local.html" target="_blank"><i>I Support Local</i> blog series</a> from earlier in the year? I'm very excited to announce that it's back...and it's even better than before. 'How could it possibly be better?' I hear you ask. Well, here are just a few reasons:<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1) <i>Sew Today, Clean Tomorrow</i> will now, almost exclusively, be focusing on Australian and New Zealand businesses. This may be pattern designers, fabric stores, bloggers and many other crafty men and women from our beautiful nations down under.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
2) Less about me, more about the Australian and New Zealand craft community as a whole. While I will still be releasing my own patterns and tutorials (just try and stop me), I will be showing off more of the great patterns from local designers. In other words, I will be making some serious awesomeness from other designers and hopefully inspiring you to do the same.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
3) Monthly pattern round-up. Each month I will do a round-up of patterns that will be released. This will be a great way to know who you need to be keeping an eye on for that month.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
4) Random stuff posts. These will just be random things I come up with over time. For example, a list of Aus/NZ knit fabric businesses, or suppliers of handbag hardware. Maybe even a Christmas round up of handmade businesses.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Doesn't it sound awesome? </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So, if you really want to keep an eye on what Australia and New Zealand has to offer, then this is the place to be. Sign up to my blog via email or bloglovin', in the top right of this page, and never miss a post (eventually I'll get around to organising a newsletter LOL). You can also follow me on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/sewtodaycleantomorrow" target="_blank">Facebook </a>and <a href="https://instagram.com/sewtodaycleantomorrow/" target="_blank">Instagram</a>.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I can't wait to start this exciting new journey. Please don't hesitate to comment below with any suggestions for great posts or other ideas that promote supporting local business.</div>

<br />
I like to keep this blog light-hearted. I like to keep it fun, casual and enjoyable. I like to think my writing is a much needed distraction from the stresses and negativity we may face in our daily lives. Today, however, I offer no such distraction.<br />
<br />
In recent weeks I have been shocked by the horrific news of yet another two women losing their lives in domestic violence situations in Australia. If the statistics I have read are true, then the number of deaths through domestic violence is appalling. I had planned on writing more about my feelings here but I simply don't have the words.<br />
<br />
Needless to say, when I stumbled upon the Quilt Blocks to Heal Violence campaign (#quiltblockstohealviolence) on Instagram, I was in!!!<br />
<br />
Instagramer <a href="https://instagram.com/jackiegillies/" target="_blank">@jackiegillies</a> has put out the call for the donation of quilt blocks. She plans on putting these towards quilts to be donated to domestic violence shelters and related charities throughout Australia.<br />
<br />
The quilt block used will be the <a href="http://www.blossomheartquilts.com/2015/01/bee-hive-tic-tac-toe/" target="_blank">Tic Tac Toe Block from Blossom Heart Quilts</a>. Jackie has requested low volume for the background with brightly coloured crosses.<br />
<br />
I have decided to do my part on Facebook and rally the troops for a sew along in my Facebook Group <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/fantasticquiltasticadventure/" target="_blank">The Sew Quilty Workshop</a>. The aim is to donate as many blocks as possible between now and the end of October. We will use the Facebook group to encourage each other to give all we can. Please jump on over and sign up for this great cause.<br />
<br />
If you're interested in donating, but don't sew, please contact Jackie (<a href="https://instagram.com/jackiegillies/" target="_blank">@jackiegillies</a>). Backing fabric and quilt batting, or Spotlight gifts cards to help purchase these, will also be required.<br />
<br />
Let's get sewing!!!

The Courthouse Steps block is one of the quickest and easiest blocks to sew. there are no difficult curves, no working on the bias, there aren't even any seams to match!!! What more could you ask for? </div>
<br />
The following tutorial is for a finished block size of 7 1/2''. The PDF version also contains instructions for 10'' and 12 1/2'' blocks.<br />

<br />
Let's talk Christmas. I know, I know, it's only September, but we of the handmade world do like to jump in early with our planning. I say 'planning' because let's face it...we'll all still be up on Christmas Eve frantically sewing away.<br />
<br />
Anywho, when some of the other One Thimble boffins suggested a pattern swap, with the purpose of making a gift, I couldn't help but say "me, me, pick me!!!'.<br />
<br />
I was lucky enough to be given the adorable <a href="http://www.feltwithlovedesigns.com/" target="_blank">Desert Fox pattern by Felt With Love Designs</a>. I have been dying to make this little cutie since Issue 8 was released, so this was a perfect opportunity.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Fox in the Flowers (weeds?)</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I had grand plans of making Poppet a few brightly coloured foxes for Christmas, but she caught wind of my little project and firmly informed me that no, foxes were in fact brown, just like the picture in the magazine. Hence, a brown fox. She hasn't put him down since I finished and spent the entire time saying "Are his ears done yet?....what about now?".<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">He was even dragged to school</td></tr>

Being me, I couldn't both use the same colours as the original AND follow the design without adding at least a little of my own flair, so I decided to hand sew it. Yup. This bad boy is 100% completely sewn by hand. I'm a little proud of this. I hardly even swore!!!<br />

<br />
I am so excited to finally be releasing my Hexie Bowl PDF Pattern. Ever since I first came up with this idea I've been in love. It is the perfect sew. Quick, easy, practical and it even uses fabric scraps. How can you go wrong?<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Tester Bowl by Joanne Rush</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

The bowl is entirely hand stitched, but don't let that put you off. It is still easy and suitable for beginners. Just take your time and it will all fall in to place.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fABHZdpnBU4/Ve0yxAcAXLI/AAAAAAAADG4/mkE5HEz_-60/s1600/Caitlin%2BCollage.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="Tester Bowl by Caitlin" border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fABHZdpnBU4/Ve0yxAcAXLI/AAAAAAAADG4/mkE5HEz_-60/s1600/Caitlin%2BCollage.png" title="Tester Bowl by Caitlin" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Tester Bowls by Caitlin of <a href="http://www.naughtscrossstitches.com/" target="_blank">http://www.naughtscrossstitches.com/</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
I love making these because you really can take them anywhere. Once you've made a few, you'll be whipping them up in no time. They have so many uses too. Sewing supplies, jewellery, you could even fill one with chocolates as a great gift idea (assuming the chocolates actually make it to the recipient).<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-exsdWRNG40A/Ve0zSEKUuDI/AAAAAAAADHc/OUyEdVu_92A/s1600/Hexie%2Bbowl%2BCollage%2B300.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="A collection of bowls I have made" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-exsdWRNG40A/Ve0zSEKUuDI/AAAAAAAADHc/OUyEdVu_92A/s1600/Hexie%2Bbowl%2BCollage%2B300.png" title="A collection of bowls I have made" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I just can't stop making these bowls.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
